De Ploeg 1918-1928
In the summer of 1918, a group of young artists decided it was time to revitalise the stagnant art scene in Groningen. The art circle they founded encouraged mutual exchange and surprised the Groningen public with the quality of its first exhibition. The association's activities then gained momentum when Jan Wiegers, one of the founders, went to Davos for treatment with the financial support of his artist friends and met the German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
This documentary by Buddy Hermans combines archive footage of Groningen with photographs and documents from the 1920s to tell the story of what is perhaps the most interesting period in the lives of the Ploeg artists.
