A New World
Whether we still want to call the American continent 'new' is debatable, but it is certain that for European composers it was a tempting 'elsewhere', a place to renew themselves and be inspired by an un-European energy. Dvořák, for example, came to teach in New York, and used the summer months to find inspiration in remote places like Spilville, Iowa - the 'American' quartet Opus 96 was the result. The American poet Amy Lowell felt the influence of the European avant-garde, especially Mallarmé, Verlaine and TS Eliot. Her poetry inspired the American composer Jennifer Higdon to write Love Sweet, in which you can hear the energy of a Copland. William Grant Still is known as the 'dean of African American composers' for the way in which he managed to combine influences.
