Afternoon Bach (early)
How did Bach do it, keeping time while exceeding all measures? Maria Milstein will play his Violin Sonata BWV1005 this afternoon, with its monster fugue on the Pentecost hymn 'Veni, Sancte Spiritus,' or 'Come, Holy Spirit'. 354 bars long, and a true balancing act in counterpoint, the strict rules for the interaction between themes and voices that Bach was so happy to break when it suited him. The rest of the sonata also tests the performer by seeking the boundaries of what was possible on the violin at the time. Milstein, who has been awarded the Nederlandse Muziekprijs, will give it his all.
