Byzantium Ballads
Smyrna, the ancient heart of Anatolia, was once a vibrant melting pot of cultures, where East and West met in the markets and ports. Famous for its narrow streets and vibrant colours, the city disappeared in the smoke of history after a fire in 1922, but its name still whispers among the ruins of the past. French-Lebanese pianist Camille El Bacha and French-Greek singer Dafné Kritharas explore the forgotten Greek heritage. Fazil Say’s first violin sonata fits in wonderfully: a vibrant fusion of Eastern mysticism and Western virtuosity, in which violin and piano attack and embrace each other as equals. After the break, Camille and Dafné present their own compositions, inspired by their dual cultures.
