One of the star composers around Louis XIV was a woman: at a young age Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre was brought into the court of his favourite mistress; as a harpsichord virtuoso and composer she mastered various musical genres from her time and environment. The turbulent life story of the composing marquise Hélène de Montgeroult is very different. She made a sensational comeback during the revolutionary years, partly thanks to the birth of the fortepiano. With her music she was far ahead of her time; did she therefore disappear from music history, or was something else going on? Answers to these questions can be found in her magnificent keyboard works.
