French Delight
Two popular festival guests will climb the stage together this afternoon for a display of musical magic. In his later years, Debussy felt such a longing for the lost French grandeur of the 'old harpsichordists who wrote so much true music' that he decided to write six new sonatas. Not so much in style, but in spirit, and the three he completed demonstrate his absolute mastery. Léon Boëllmann's music combines virtuosity, modality and surprising harmonies. His Cello Sonata is rich in colour, drama and subtly refers to Franck, Duparc and the French organ tradition. In between, Fauré's Élégie, once dreamed of as the slow movement of a sonata, is heard.
