Italian Divas

With the dawning of the Renaissance, female composers awoke from a long hibernation in which church music had set the standard. Northern Italian city-states became stages for worldly and warm-blooded genres, such as the madrigal and the opera. In addition to the well-known Barbara Strozzi and Francesca Caccini, other women also pioneered these new musical fields. A true explosion of musical creativity also took place in the many Italian monasteries where nuns wrote masses and cantatas, often anonymously and in a surprisingly earthy style.

This lecture is part of the three-part lecture cycle on women in music history by Saskia Törnqvist, musicologist and lecturer in music and cultural history at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

For novice listeners, this is a chance to get acquainted with Western music history; for the more advanced, this is a much-needed brush-up course.
