It’s all about Folk

Middagconcert

It all starts at the source. ‘It’s all about Folk’ returns to where music once began: folk music, direct and deeply rooted in everyday life.

The Ragazze Quartet opens with Caroline Shaw’s ‘Root’, in which those origins are palpable as a living force. This is followed by Scandinavian folk melodies – raw, dance-like and steeped in landscape and tradition.

In Grieg’s Second Violin Sonata, that influence comes into its own. His music is so distinctly rooted in Norwegian folk music that his teacher called the work ‘too Norwegian’ – a judgement that Grieg only confirmed.

A programme that demonstrates: without folk, there is no classical music.
