'This ship is a dreamed reality. The Azart lives in nature, always afloat, with the birds and the waves, with and in the wind.’
These are the words of August Dirks, a master of the art of living (and opera lover). He is the founder and captain of the Amsterdam-based ship of fools, the Azart, The Ship of Fools. For 33 years, the Azart sailed the world as a floating work of art, bringing theatre, music and merriment. The ship and its eccentric crew followed the VOC route, this time not to: “Steal and slaughter, but to share and play.” Carrying wonder in its hold and, once moored, seeking genuine connection with the local residents.One of the many meanings of the word ‘Azart’ is: to persevere with passion until your goal is achieved. August feels like a jester, with jingling bells and colourful clothing. A jester who wants to hold up a mirror to society and ask who is actually the fool. Fortune favours the foolish, but… who is actually the fool?
Due to setbacks along the way, the ship set course for a final spectacular mooring. The ship has now run aground – literally – on a small South American beach, where the marvellous story continues to unfold, led by a group of local artists. Amsterdam’s Azartplein is named after this ‘fool’s barge’.
Filmmakers Annike Kaljouw and Masha Novikova followed part of the route and also made use of footage shot by those on board, interspersed with stunning stop-motion animation. The documentary is about persevering with indomitable optimism and confidence. A work of art about dreams, perseverance and navigating life’s challenges.
