Metamorphosis
Strauss' Metamorphosen exudes a dark, melancholic glow, like ashes still warm from what once burned. You can taste Strauss's silent desperation for the destruction of German culture and cities, not as a political protest, but as an inner mourning the piece sounds - a silent in memoriam for a world in ruins. Braunfels' quartet also whispers and glows, written in the shadow of war but without surrendering to it. Within the classical forms, melodies circle full of subdued power, sometimes dreamy, sometimes rebellious.
