Singing of earthly and heavenly love

Nothing has been sung about as often as love, whether for God or for another human being. The Greek poet Sappho sang freely about her desire and was glorified but also vilified for that reason. The German abbess Hildegard von Bingen sublimated her passion into musical devotion and stepped outside the shores of the prevailing musical conventions with her songs. With the songs of the Occitan trobairitz, earthly love reemerged, as if Sappho had never left.

This lecture is part of the three-part lecture cycle on women in music history by Saskia Törnqvist, musicologist and lecturer in music and cultural history at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

For novice listeners, this is a chance to get acquainted with Western music history; for the more advanced, this is a much-needed brush-up course.
