The Individual in the Mass
The Individual in the Mass is a compelling programme in which the Berlage Saxophone Quartet and star violinist Noa Wildschut give voice to both the struggle and the harmony of the human condition. Two age-old longings take centre stage: the drive for individual fulfilment and the desire to become one with the group.
In Ravel’s Tzigane and Blues and Milhaud’s Le bœuf sur le toit, soloist and ensemble merge into a cohesive whole, whilst in Pärt’s Fratres they stand in direct opposition to one another. Intimate solo pieces allow the individual to break away from the crowd, whilst music by Hildegard von Bingen and Bartók seeks dialogue.
A concert full of tension, contrast and ensemble playing – in which the individual and the collective constantly challenge and reinforce one another.
