The Women We Missed
The opening concert of the 25th autumn edition sets the tone immediately. The Women We Missed is a powerful musical statement in which the festival looks back on its own history — and acknowledges that female composers have been structurally absent from its programming over the past 25 years. Completely unjustly. With this concert, something is set right, and a broader imbalance in the musical world is called into question once more.
From the refined sound world of Amanda Maier to the drama of Rita Strohl and the expressive power of Margaret Bonds: this is music that should have had a permanent place long ago. Star soprano Judith van Wanroij performs songs by María Grever — whose worldwide hit What a Diff'rence a Day Makes everyone knows, but almost no one knows that she was the composer.
The final word belongs to Grażyna Bacewicz, whose First Piano Quintet swept away all persistent stereotypes about female composers with a single stroke of the pen.
