Violin for Breakfast

Ontbijtconcert

The day begins with a sense of tension and excitement. The young Dutch violinist Luna van Leeuwen returns to the island following her participation in the masterclasses and an impressive second prize at the Dutch Violin Competition earlier this year.

The focus is on Leoš Janáček’s violin sonata, written at the start of the First World War. This music is full of friction and clashes: Janáček himself said that in this sonata he could ‘hear, as it were, the sound of steel clashing in his restless mind’. The result is raw, intense and unpredictable.

The concert concludes with a completely different energy: Henryk Wieniawski’s virtuoso variations – brilliant, playful and pushed to the very limit.

A breakfast concert that won’t let you wake up gently, but will immediately put you on your toes.
