Vive la France!
No baguettes or berets — just music that moves you. Vive la France! presents the French sound world at its finest: elegant, expressive and full of character.
Judith van Wanroij shines in songs by Fauré. Then comes the discovery of Mel Bonis — born Mélanie Bonis, she changed her name so it wouldn't be immediately obvious she was a woman. Today it's almost impossible to imagine such a step being necessary; it speaks volumes about the inequality female composers faced. Kersten McCall, principal flautist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, returns to the island to bring her flute sonata to life.
The finale belongs to Franck's Piano Quintet: a work full of tension and emotion that carries you from beginning to end. France at its most powerful — and without clichés.
