Public transit

Lauwersoog, from where you’ll take the ferry, is easily accessible with public transportation. There are direct train connections from Rotterdam, The Hague, Schiphol and Utrecht to Groningen and Leeuwarden. From Groningen station, you can take bus 163 to Veerhaven Lauwersoog. From Leeuwarden station, you can take bus 50 to Veerhaven Lauwersoog.

By car

Lauwersoog-Haven is in the north-western corner of Groningen, on the Frysian border, and can be reached via the N361. From Groningen, follow directions towards Winsum and then to Lauwersoog.  If you’re coming from the direction of Leeuwarden, follow the route Dokkum / Lauwersoog.

Schiermonnikoog allows few cars, and you can’t bring your own car, motorcycle, or moped. Only in exceptional cases can you request an exemption with the municipality of Schiermonnikoog (tel.: +31 5190 535050). Make sure to do so well in advance. There are two large parking areas at the ferry, but keep in mind that parking and buying a ticket will cost some time.

Ferry

Ferries of Wagenborg Passagierdiensten generally offers four trips between Lauwersoog and Schiermonnikoog per day. There are extra boats during peak season and busy days. You can buy your boat tickets on the spot or order them online. You can place your baggage in the baggage carts before boarding free of charge. Bicycles and trailers are allowed on the boat.
