Cello for Breakfast
Ontbijtconcert
Some music does not come about without a struggle. In this breakfast concert, the young Korean cellist Stella Cho takes on Frédéric Chopin’s Cello Sonata – a work that might never have seen the light of day without the tenacity of cellist Auguste Franchomme.
Chopin had a difficult relationship with the cello. After his early works, he largely neglected the instrument, and this sonata, too, came into being only slowly. At the premiere, only three movements were performed – such were his lingering doubts. And yet the piece grew to become one of the most beloved cello sonatas in the repertoire.
Together with pianist Craig White, Stella demonstrates how that tension remains audible: between cello and piano, between hesitation and conviction.
A breakfast concert in which you can hear how doubt can ultimately lead to something great.
