The Boston Six

Almost everyone knows the French Groupe des Six — Poulenc, Milhaud and their circle — but who knows The Boston Six? In this concert, the festival dives into a virtually forgotten chapter of American music history.

At the centre is Amy Beach, pioneer and powerful composer, whose string quartet is performed by the prize-winning Animato Quartet. Dutch star violinist Noa Wildschut shines in Beach's lyrical Romance. Horatio Parker and Arthur Foote — both members of The Boston Six — also take a prominent place. Cellist and festival founder Jeroen Reuling performs music by Parker. After the interval comes Foote's Piano Quintet — a late-Romantic work receiving its Dutch première during this concert — performed by an ensemble including cellist Ella van Poucke, a former student of Reuling.

A programme full of rediscoveries that, at a time when America often asserts itself aggressively on the world stage, reminds us of how much beauty has emerged from that same continent.
