The March of the Women
The corset of women's oppression was becoming increasingly tight: in the United States, calls for women's suffrage were growing louder, and the spark soon spread to Europe. In this climate, a new type of female composer came to the fore: strong-willed, determined and enterprising. The Swedish Elfrida Andrée took the baton herself and conducted her own orchestral works; in Paris, the robust Augusta Holmès outshone her male colleagues with a grandiose composition commemorating the French Revolution; in London, the British Ethel Smyth gave the women in the struggle a boost with her ‘March of the Women’ and received the curious compliment that she ‘composed like a man’. Well, well.
In this lecture, musicologist Saskia Törnqvist takes you on a journey through the lives and music of these extraordinary women.
