The Muse and the Fashion (early)
Fashion? Nikolai Medtner did not participate in that. As in much of his music, in his Second Violin Sonata he combines romantic expression with classical forms, far removed from the modernist tendencies around him. The harmony is rich and complex, with a deep-rooted Russian sensitivity and a sense of nostalgia, characteristics that were also admired by his contemporary Rachmaninov. Maria Milstein and festival director Caspar Vos sign for a lived-in performance.
